John Stewart Smart was the only child of Isabella (ne Stewart) and Tommy, born in 1923. Tommy's family came from Govan, Isabella's Paisley, and the couple moved into a brand new council house in Lochfield , Paisley in the early 1930s. My dad John was know as Jack in the Smart family, as his grandfather and one of his uncles were also called John. Jack was educated at Lochfield Primary School, and Camphill |High School. He joined a Paisley law firm in 1938, aged 15, and combined this with studying law at Glasgow University, from which he graduated just after WW2. in 1943, when he became eligible for military service, he joined the Fleet Air Arm, where , as a navigator, he patrolled the Atlantic.seaways He joined British Railways as a solicitor in the early 1950s. Shortly after ,he started a distinguished career as a Labour Party Councillor, and became the Town's Treasurer and then its final Provost in 1973. On the abolition of Paisley Town Council in 1975 her retired from local politics. Baptised in the Church of Scotland, he was an active Christian, and a Church Elder of Lylesland Church in Paisley. He was a Rangers supporters, but celebrated Celtic's famous European Cup Win in 1967, and his own team's Cup Winners Cup victory in 1972. After a series of heart attacks, he died at home in June 1976
